Philip (Pip) Arnold

ABB Marketing was formed when Arnold Farms was sold and the direct route to J Sainsbury was facing jeopardy. On behalf of the farm, Pip Arnold approached Alan Cheeseman at Sainsbury's to ask if it was possible to continue to supply them.

After some deliberation, the response was positive under one condition; the supermarket chain had to be supplied by one single entity. Hence, ABB was created (Arnold, Budd and Boucher) to meet those criteria.

Pip Arnold was a true petrol head; he loved driving and he loved driving fast!

After a stint of driving the TR3 he was approached by Morgan cars. He drove for them with some success at many of the iconic tracks in Europe in an era when it really was a dangerous sport! Morgan were a small firm up against the might of Ferrari and Porsche. Whilst consistently outpaced by the bigger engined cars on the straights the nimble little Morgan was more than capable around the corners.

He always loved sporty cars and had a series of Jaguar E Types which he used drive up and down from London when they had the farms and the wholesale business. Latterly trips out with Pip in his little red BMW 3 Series was also an experience to relish… boy was he quick!

The History of Morgan

Chris Lawrence and his Lawrence Tune team began privately developing the Morgan Plus 4 for racing in the late 1950s. By 1961, Lawrence was running the factory Works team of racers in the UK and Europe, regularly humbling significant opposition, including Porsche. At the time, the Morgan Motor Company didn’t have the resources to officially run or sponsor a Works team so instead gave Chris all the support and encouragement they could to race at national and international levels, often as Works entries.

It was this development of the Morgan that led to the prototype for the factory-built Morgan Plus 4 Super Sports.

The second Morgan and Triumph SLR was built for Pip Arnold, legend has it that this car was never painted because soon after delivery it was due to be raced at Spa and so the aluminium bodywork was merely polished.

The new Morgans became the 2 litre cars to beat in international GT racing. TOK 258, alongside the Morgan’s of Pip Arnold and Peter Marten won at Spa, Clermont Ferand, Monza, Nürburgring.

Pip Anold was a semi-professional driver alongside Chris and Richard Shepherd-Barron.
